Examining yourself from a biblical perspective requires self-reflection in light of God’s Word and a willingness to be convicted by the Holy Spirit. The Bible speaks clearly about truth, deception, and the condition of the human heart. Here’s how you can examine yourself according to Scripture:

1. Ask God to Search Your Heart

  • Psalm 139:23-24“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
  • Pray honestly and ask God to reveal any deceit, hypocrisy, or hidden motives within you.

2. Examine Your Words and Actions

  • Luke 6:45“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
  • Your speech and actions are a reflection of your heart. Do your words align with truth, or do you manipulate, exaggerate, or hide things for personal benefit?

3. Measure Yourself Against God’s Standard of Truth

  • John 14:6“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
  • Proverbs 12:22“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are His delight.”
  • Are you living in the truth of Christ or following the ways of the world where deceit is often justified?

4. Identify Self-Deception

  • Jeremiah 17:9“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”
  • Sometimes, we deceive ourselves and don’t even realize it. Are you making excuses for dishonesty? Are you comfortable living in half-truths?

5. Examine the Fruit of Your Life

  • Galatians 5:22-23 – The fruit of the Spirit includes truthfulness, love, and self-control.
  • James 3:17“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”
  • Does your life produce truth, integrity, and sincerity, or are there signs of manipulation, deception, and selfish ambition?

6. Confess and Repent if Necessary

  • 1 John 1:9“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
  • If the Holy Spirit convicts you, don’t run from it. Confess your sin, ask for God’s forgiveness, and seek to walk in integrity.

7. Walk in the Light

  • 1 John 1:6-7“If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
  • Living in truth is a daily choice to walk in God’s light rather than the world’s deception.

Final Question: Are You Living for God or for Yourself?

At the core, deceit often comes from selfishness—seeking approval, avoiding consequences, or gaining something. But Jesus calls His followers to deny themselves and live for Him.

  • Colossians 3:9-10“Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator.”
  • Ephesians 4:25“Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.”

If you’re struggling with this, know that God’s grace is available to you. He calls us not to be perfect, but to be repentant and willing to change. The more you align yourself with Christ, the more truth will define your life.
